Disclaimer: Doctor Who is the property of the BBC. Simon in the icon belongs to Edward MacLachlan and some other folk. This Simon is mine.

A/N: I decided a while back to write a short series of not-quite-drabbles about Simon, an original character who appears in I'll Meet You on the Other Side. These stories take place during the time that Simon is working with John Smith, the Duplicate Doctor. These short snips are unbetad; all mistakes are mine and mine alone. Concrit and comments welcome.

One: Calm

Days with Mr. Smith are always a challenge. It’s not just keeping him alive—that’s become easier as the months pass, as Simon grows a bit bolder and more comfortable with his role as earthbound companion to this otherworldly time-traveler. No, keeping him alive is now the least of his worries.

Simon worries about his memory. He worries over the frenetic feeling that he gets when he feels the clock ticking closer to the day he’s meant to get something done. He knows that too much depends on him, and he feels so very little and tiny and small. Too small, too young, too inexperienced to do this work.

His father believes in him, though, and knows that he’ll be able to do what needs to be done. He's lonely for his father. At home it was just the two of them, the only two out of sync with their world, and while it was just the two, at least they were together. Now he's alone in a strange world. He's still out of sync. He's still got the weight of a world on his shoulders.

He's still got to get milk for tea.

He checks the shopping list one last time, then, while waiting in line, the list that he keeps in his pockets, the dates he’s marked on the calendar, the ones he’s done and completed, the ones still to come waiting for their markings. The end is coming and he’s getting closer and closer to being able to go home, to having this burden removed from the shoulders which are too young for this task. He crumples the piece of paper in his hand. One day he'll be back in sync. One day his mind will be under his entire control. Will be as long as he doesn't screw up--

No—musn’t think about that. Staying calm was the only way to keep things in order.

Aw--he appreciates it. It's hard to be the Doctor's companion, especially when he's human and can die AND when you have other stuff to do as well. He needs all the hugs he can get, but he and JS do have some fun!

I liked this - nice insight into Simon's mind and his worries. Hope he works things out soon. :)

Has it been revealed yet who he is exactly (if he's related to a character we know)? Sorry if that sounds like a silly question. I'll have to go back and read the fic to double check. I like Simon being John Smith's companion.

Thanks--these little stories are going to be small bonbons, and Simon worries a lot. He and Mr. Smith will have some fun, though. Simon might even meet a girl...

In Chapter 11 of I'll Meet You, Simon calls Jack "Uncle." That's all we know.

I'm sure they will have fun - this is Mr. Smith after all. Glad to know Simon will meet a girl - that should be good for him. :)

Oh okay. I remember that part. Doesn't seem like much to go on. But I'll take it. I look forward to finding out more about Simon.
